Is outsourcing the ideal solution for your company?

Maybe we should start by asking if outsourcing can even be considered a solution? Well, it all depends on your company’s culture, structure and managerial style. The latter will also play a huge role when you need to decide on outsourcing or not.

To make the decision easier, we provide you with an outline of benefits and disadvantages to outsourcing:

Benefits:

  • The latest in marketing expertise and technology are to your disposal.
  • An outsourced company can engage in a whole range of marketing activities while you proceed with day to day work activities. Internal personnel are often loaded with everyday tasks and do not have the luxury of investigating, reading, conducting research or even drawing up comprehensive marketing plans.
  • You do not need to keep an external company on board for longer as needed, which make it a cost-effective solution for once-off projects and events.
  • With outsourcing, the opportunity arises to build a beneficial relationship with an outsourced company, because as they get to know your business, they can add more value.
  • You may hold an external company or person to their promise of service-delivery and expertise. Should they not meet the mutually agreed requirements, you would be able to terminate the relationship almost immediately.

Tips on employing an external company for marketing services:

  • Consider outsourcing as an investment in your business rather than an expense.
  • Determine in advance the company’s expertise in the field where you require it. - Outsource for the right reasons. The company you employ are not a scapegoat for past mistakes or covering for internal inefficiencies. If corrective measures are to be taken by the consultant, be honest about the issue as well as the outcome.
  • Agree to performance and deliverables.
  • Appoint someone on senior level in your company who could deal with the consultants daily. Ideally, the whole management team should be involved.
  • If you are unsure of the risks and you are not totally convinced that the outsourced company will add value, do not outsource!

The disadvantages are:

  • Loss of managerial control. If you are a control freak, this could prove to be a huge challenge.
  • Quality problems and hidden costs.
  • Access to the company’s confidential information.
  • Bad publicity or a conflict of interest should the company also service competitors in the same industry.

The disadvantages can be overcome by proper contractual agreements and good communication!
